Up until 1989, the Western Flycatcher was recognized as a singular species. In that year, and until 2023, these birds were considered two separate species, the Pacific-slope and the Cordilleran Flycatchers. In 2023, these birds were lumped back together as a singular species but five subspecies were recognized. Integrades between these populations are frequent and present individual birds which are (perhaps) impossible to distinguish in the field and some have argued in the lab.
