Mud Spring

Mud Spring is on North Percha Road (a.k.a. Forest Service Road 57 or FR-157), one mile west of the United States National Forest Service boundary.  If you are locating this spring by watching The Roads of the Black Range - NM-152 to Carbonate Canyon, the spring is “8:19” into the video.  A map of the location is provided below.

Mud Spring is literally on the road.  Just to the left (as you drive in) of the road is the improved spring site.  It is well maintained.  A pipe runs from the spring, under the road to the north (outlet shown in photo to the right).  Water from this pipe fills a small stock pond which is generally the archetypical mud hole of the west.  However, on Monday, when we visited the site, the pool of water was beautiful.  The water was clear, speedwell was blooming, a blue dragonfly of undetermined species was flying about, water striders were gliding across the surface, and tadpoles and water beetles were swimming about.  There is no fencing at the spring.

Overflow from the pond runs into the adjacent creek and most recently into a stock tank, the small pond is now dry.
