The Grey-headed Junco subspecies was first described by Woodhouse in 1853.  It is closely related to J. h. dorsalis which is also found in western New Mexico.  The Dark-eyed Junco species (as currently recognized) is divided into several groups, most of which have several subspecies assigned to them.  There are speciation questions about the make-up of the groups and about whether some subspecies or groups should be elevated to full species.
