Junco, Dark-eyed (Grey-headed) - Junco hyemalis caniceps Forest Service Trail 796 from Kingston Cemetery to Emory Pass, Black Range, New Mexico December 25, 2017 - Photo above and two below
The Grey-headed Junco subspecies was first described by Woodhouse in 1853. It is closely related to J. h. dorsalis which is also found in western New Mexico. The Dark-eyed Junco species (as currently recognized) is divided into several groups, most of which have several subspecies assigned to them. There are speciation questions about the make-up of the groups and about whether some subspecies or groups should be elevated to full species.
